More Observations - Ireland

Hi Jane, this selection of images are just idle musings from Ireland and the drawings are by children from the island of Rathlin! I'm flattered that you thought they were my own work!!

Your suggestions on presentation are interesting, although the meaning and intent in my work is not about the uncanny. I am interested in the aesthetic qualities of the uncanny (as a small part of a much larger picture so to speak)where the uncanny is simply a by-product of something more significan, and (pause for breath) how those qualities may relate to and be the result of our current cultural climate. The subject matter of much art in todays contemporary cultural context (in my view at least!), is often disturbing and unsettling and therefore it seems logical that in order to reflect this view the artist must adopt a suitable aesthetic style appropriate to his or her intent. Anyhow I am rambling now, sorry if I sound pompous, thank you so much for your comments. Mx

Hi Caroline,
The sketches are by little children living on the sparsely populated island of Rathlin (just off the Antrim coast, 11 miles from the Mull of Kintyre!). They were in a large book compiled by the residents of Rathlin and which was on show in the islands tiny museum. I am fascinated by the frequently disturbing and uncanny nature of many childrens drawings, and those of 'Outsider' artists. In many ways there are strong similarities between Outsider art and childrens art in the unselfconscious and unique viewpoint of the world that these two groups have. What I really like in a contemporary art context is adult material and subject matter depicted as if a child had drawn them; uncanny! thank you for your comments, Mx
